On the 20th of April 2016, the new ATEX Standard came into effect. Broadly speaking this new directive, which requires the prevention of electrostatic charges with the capacity to cause potentially dangerous discharges through appropriate measures including, among other measures, anti-static coatings, applies to all equipment that:

  • Has an effective source of ignition of its own
  • Is intended for use within potentially explosive atmospheres
  • Is used under normal atmospheric conditions

This obviously means that all hand-held wireless enabled devices used in varying industries’ safety critical working environments and applications must have suitable protection and anti-static coatings to prevent dangerous discharges in order to meet current ATEX regulations.

Diamond Coatings Anti-Static Coatings

Examples of such hand-held devices may, for instance, include load monitoring or gas detection equipment in industries including:

  • Construction, Heavy Lifting and Marine Industries
  • Oil, Gas and Gas Distribution Industries
  • Chemical, Defence and Nuclear Industries
  • Industrial Safety and Utilities

Specialising in the deposit of ITO coatings onto the plastic housings of such devices, this, of course, is where we come in. Featuring excellent anti-static properties, our coatings can be applied specifically as anti-static coatings. Diamond Coatings have already worked with a number of clients on solutions to assist their products in meeting the latest ATEX requirements.

Examples

Diamond Coatings have, for example, worked on providing ITO anti-static coatings for a client providing hand-held wireless dynamometers and monitoring/overload alarm displays for various rigging and lifting industries. Another interesting example would be a hand-held wireless enabled device that we have enabled to pass ATEX standards with our ITO anti-static coatings this was a portable multi-gas detector suitable for industries including, among others:

  • Brewing, Chemical and Construction
  • Fire/Hazmat, Gas Distribution and Industrial Safety
  • Nuclear, Oil/Gas and Petrochemical
  • Refining, Steel and Water/Waste

Having vacuum deposited our clear anti-static coatings to anything from simple labels to customer-specific moulded designs, all products/devices vacuum coated with our anti-static coatings have been subjected to and passed relevant safety tests by our clients.
